Nine months later, he then feeds back from the actual results to these anticipations. This very soon shows him what he did well and what his strengths are. It also shows him what he has to learn and what habits he has to…

Society of Performing Organization “By their fruits ye shall know them.” Society in all developed countries has become a society of organizations in which most, if not all, social tasks are being done in and by an organization. Organizations do not exist for their own sake. They are means: each society’s organ for the discharge of one social task. The organization’s goal is a specific contribution to individual and society. The test of its performance, unlike that of a biological organism, therefore, always lies outside itself. This means that we must know what “performance” means for this or that institution.…

The Function of Management Is to Produce Results Above all management is responsible for producing results. Management has to give direction to the institution it manages. It has to think through the institution’s mission, has to set its objectives, and has to organize resources for the results the institution has to contribute. Management is, indeed, J.B. Say’s “entrepreneur” and responsible for directing vision and resources toward greatest results and contributions. In performing these essential functions, management everywhere faces the same problems. It has to organize work for productivity; it has to lead the worker toward productivity and achievement. It is…

During July 2019 some international economists quoted as saying that more than 90 states in the world have banned the use of plastic bags and another 36 regulate them with levies and fees. At least 25 countries with bans counting Panama — have exemptions for perishable foods or medicines. Bans are mainly widespread in Africa. They have also stated that this is partly because relatively low-waste collection and recycling rates make the problem of waste plastic more visible, partly because Africa exports very little plastic and lacks a strong industry lobby. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) revealed that up…
Researchers revealed that Pakistani fish exporters are getting relatively lower prices of their seafood exported because they exported 90 percent un-processed and frozen fish. Therefore, urgent attempts are required for operationalizing the fish processing plants in the country. Organizational Inertia All organizations need a discipline that makes them face up to reality. All organizations need to know that virtually no program or activity will perform effectively for a long time without modification and redesign. Eventually every activity becomes obsolete. Among organizations that ignore this fact, the worst offender if government. Indeed, the inability to stop doing anything is the central disease of government and a major reason why government today is sick. Hospitals and universities are only a little better than government in getting rid of yesterday. Businessmen are just as sentimental about yesterday as bureaucrats. They are…

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Pakistan’s remittances from overseas workers were increased 24 percent to $2.039 billion in the first month of FY2019-2020 from $1.645 billion in the last month. However, statistics also showed that July remittances were recorded slightly higher than the corresponding period previous year, when Pakistani expatriates sent home $1.981 billion. A monthly rise in remittance flows reflects economic recovery in source markets and the government’s attempts to encourage overseas Pakistanis to remit through legal means. Moreover, it is said that overseas Pakistanis sent home more remittances to their families to buy sacrificial animals…
The economy of Pakistan is struggling with growth. Various economists accept that economy is going through its most critical phase. The government official identified that the economic reform agenda is bringing stability to the Pakistan’s economy; some stability has already been recorded and based on these reforms Pakistan would attain long-term economic growth and prosperity which will benefit the low income as well as middle class. Present statistics identified that the current account deficit has dropped below $14 billion. Previous year it was recorded at $20 billion. The present Government of Pakistan has implemented measures to make imports more expensive,…
International economists conclude that for all countries trade is beneficial and for this reason; no country finds it feasible to be closed economy anymore. However, the mutual hostility between Pakistan and India has resulted in negligible trade. But unluckily, relations between Pakistan and India currently worsened when the Government of Pakistan planned to downgrade diplomatic ties with India, recalls its high commissioner from New Delhi, expel the Indian envoy to Islamabad and suspend bilateral trade. These decisions were taken at a high-level meeting chaired through the present Prime Minister of Pakistan in response to the Indian government’s move to scrap…
The Government of Pakistan officials mentioned in a statement that although domestically the government was following stabilization process, however globally, growing rising trade tensions posing a risk to the worldwide growth outlook in FY2019. After a strong growth during 2017 and early 2018, worldwide economic activity slowed noticeably in the second half of last year, reflecting a confluence of factors affecting major economies. This is the reason International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised downward real Gross Domestic Products growth for almost all countries in World Economic Outlook, April 2019 for FY2019. Officials also mentioned in the Pakistan’s survey that the…
STOCK EXCHANGES AROUND THE WORLD US indexes boosted by stimulus hopes Wall Street’s three main indexes rose more than 1% on Friday, clawing back some losses from a brutal selloff this week on hopes of more stimulus from central banks to perk up slowing growth. Stocks got a boost after a report that Germany’s government would be prepared to ditch its balanced budget rule and take on new debt to counter a possible recession. Earlier, China’s state planner said it would roll out a plan to boost disposable income this year and in 2020 to spur consumption as the economy…

WORLD COMMODITIES TRADING OPEC sees bearish oil outlook for rest of 2019 OPEC delivered a downbeat oil market outlook for the rest of 2019 on Friday as economic growth slows and highlighted challenges in 2020 as rivals pump more, building a case to keep up an OPEC-led pact to curb supply. In a monthly report, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries cut its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2019 by 40,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.10 million bpd and indicated the market will be in slight surplus in 2020. The bearish outlook due to slowing economies…
Limits of Social Responsibility “It is not enough for business to do well; it must also do good.” But in order to “do good,” a business must first “do well.” Whenever a business has disregarded the limitation of economic performance and has assumed social responsibilities that it could not support economically, it has soon gotten into trouble. Union carbide was not socially responsible when it put its into Vienna, West Virginia, to alleviate unemployment there. It was, in fact, irresponsible. The plant was marginal to begin with. The process was obsolescent. At best the plant could barely keep its head…

WORLD COMMODITIES TRADING World oil prices spring back after heavy slump Oil prices gained about 3% on Friday a day after recording their biggest daily drop in several years on US President Donald Trump’s vow to impose more tariffs on Chinese imports. For the week, crude oil benchmarks recorded a loss. Washington’s new tariffs on China, due to take effect on Sept. 1, intensify the trade war between the world’s top two economies. Any resulting economic slowdown could hurt crude demand. Brent crude LCOc1 futures for October delivery settled at $61.89 a barrel, up $1.39, or 2.30%. The global benchmark…
Common Core of Unity There has to be a “common culture” or at least a “cultural affinity.” Successful diversification by acquisition, like all successful diversification, requires a common core of unity. The two businesses must have in common either markets or technology; through occasionally a comparable production process has also provided sufficient unity of experience and expertise, as well as a common language, to bring companies together. With-out such a core of unity, diversification, especially by acquisition, never works; financial ties alone are insufficient. One example is a big French company that has been built by acquiring producers of all…

Various economists urged that the association between savings and economic growth is not only a significant but also a controversial issue for both policy makers and academicians. They have also examined that this phenomenon as cause and effect relationship. It is also believed that savings affected the economic growth because higher savings led to capital accumulation, which in turn led to economic growth in any country. Moreover, studies suggested that over the last two decades, much of the differences in economic presentation between Pakistan and the rapidly growing Southeast Asian countries were due to the low rates of savings and…

It has been a matter of great concern for various international as well as domestic economists that how FDI impacts economic growth of the host country. In the report it is also urged that in a closed economy, with no access to foreign saving, investment is financed solely from domestic savings. However, in open economy investment is financed both through domestic savings and foreign capital flows, counting…

Business Not Financial Strategy “There ain’t no bargains,” and “You get at most what you pay for,” Successful acquisitions are based upon business plans, not financial analyses. Acquisition targets must fit the business strategies of the acquiring company; other wise, the acquisition is likely to fail. The worst acquisition record of the last decades of the twentieth century was that of Peter Grace, the longtime CEP of W. R. Grace. He was a brilliant man. He set out in the 1950s to build a world-class multinational through financially-based acquisitions. He assembled the ablest group of financial analysts and had them…

Resource-Allocation Decisions The allocation of capital and people determine whether the organization will do well or poorly. The allocation of capital and performing people converts into action all that management knows about its business – they determine whether the organization will do well or well or poorly. An organization should allocate human resources as purposefully and as thoughtfully as it allocates capital. To understand a capital investment, a company has to look at four measures: return on investment, payback period, cash flow, and discounted present value. Each of these four measures tells the executive something different about a prospective capital…
