[box type=”info” align=”” class=”” width=””]Iwa Salami, University of East London[/box] The price of bitcoin hit $17,000 late last year and – although the cryptocurrency has plunged since then – there are signs that an absence of regulation can hurt investors and trigger the next financial crisis. Despite the laudable blockchain technology and the great opportunities it offers in enabling quicker transactions, numerous problems can be associated with its products – such as bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies – if regulation is delayed. As I have previously argued, global measures for the use of digital currency should swiftly come into force. However,…

Designed to help alleviate poverty in some of the world’s poorest countries, microfinance initiatives provide loans to entrepreneurs and small businesses, hoping this will help the poor to work themselves out of desperate poverty. But if formal, government-supported microfinance initiatives are widely available, why haven’t loan sharks and predatory lenders been wiped out? If microfinance cannot compete with informal lenders, can we be confident…

The rungs of the property ladder seem to get further and further out of reach. If there was ever a time to introduce mass-produced affordable housing, surely that time is now. The benefits of mass production have been well known since Henry Ford’s car factories made the Model T back in 1908. It was only made…

Olive oil is touted as the gold standard among all edible oils today; a reputation that has been gained primarily from its association of a lower incidence of heart disease among the Mediterranean populations who have traditionally consumed olive oil as their main dietary fat. The component of interest is the monounsaturated oleic acid content of olive oil, which on average is about 70% of its composition. Epidemiological studies have been further validated by clinical studies under controlled laboratory conditions that show a beneficial effect of monounsaturated oleic acid and especially that from olive oil. Other monounsaturated oils such as…

Our preliminary research suggests, that women opt-out because they don’t feel they fit in within their organisations, because they feel they won’t succeed, or because they feel their sacrifices will not be rewarded. There are a number of ways in which organisation can ensure that women feel as though they fit in. First and foremost, organisations must provide…

At the time, the screens were just too small and it seemed too inconvenient to go through a checkout process without a proper keyboard. Now, seven years after the launch of the first iPhone, we can safely say that smartphones have become a viable shopping channel for many Americans. Thanks to larger screens, mobile optimized online shops, dedicated smartphone apps and easy check-out/payment options, and of course tablets, mobile devices now account…

Cosmopolitan cities jam packed with culture, pristine beaches, excellent ski resorts, you name it. Given all of that, it comes as little surprise that many Europeans never travel outside the EU. The most recent Eurobarometer data showing the share of people who have travelled at least once outside the EU was published in 2014. The following infographic shows the results of the research, with Swedes most likely to have been outside the EU. That is more than likely due to…

Trade deficit widens 29pc to $15bn, pressure on reserves to persist Pakistan’s trade deficit widened to $15 billion in the first five months of fiscal year 2018, suggesting that International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) apprehensions over the external sector are not baseless. In particular, it has grown fastest in Russia, India and China – places where this was long suspected but there was little accurate data to paint a reliable picture. Donald Trump had been elected president of the United States. The polls hadn’t seen it coming. They hadn’t seen Brexit coming either. Would populism and protectionism win in Europe as well? Was this the end of globalization? What would happen to everything the European Union stood for? Many feared that the populist wave would spread to Europe, in particular, the Netherlands, France and Germany. This would have meant a real revolution in 21st century Europe. But in December…
[box type=”info” align=”” class=”” width=””]Bo Rothstein Professor of Government and Public Policy, University of Gothenburg[/box] Corruption is sometimes portrayed as a “cancer” in society. The use of this terminology indicates that this is a social ill that starts at some place in the body and then spreads as it infects ever more cells. If this metaphor has any value, it is important to find the right location of the corruption problem in the “societal body”. If you do not know where the illness is located, the likelihood that you can cure it is of course minimal. It is, however, important…

It’s important to point out that Mr. Semler isn’t an academic or an expert in management theory, he is the CEO of a successful industrial company. His views are unlikely to represent mainstream thinking on organizational design. But perhaps it is time we redefine the term “manager”, and question whether the idea of “management” as it was inherited from the industrial…

In November of this year alone, 28 of the so-called “ghost ships” were discovered by Japanese authorities with 42 people who claim to be fishermen found alive. 18 bodies have also been recovered so far. The grim discoveries suggest that the situation in North Korea is becoming desperate with sanctions and food shortages likely driving fishermen further out to sea to secure bigger catches. And many of the world’s most high-profile entrepreneurs have hailed from migrant backgrounds: Steve Jobs’ father was a migrant from Syria; Tesla founder Elon Musk was born and raised in South Africa, before moving to North America to study in Canada…
