Interview with Mr. Gul Muhammad Lot, Chairman Mehran Spice & Food Industries
PAGE: Tell me something about yourself, please:
Gul Muhammad Lot: I began my professional journey in the 1980s by joining the family business while simultaneously pursuing a Master’s in Political Science from the University of Sindh, Hyderabad. In addition to this the graduation with a degree in Economics, provided me with a strong foundation in business and market dynamics. My career later took a significant turn into politics, as I was elected as Member of Provisional Assembly in 1990. Following with the Minister of Environment in 1993 and Minister of Anti-Corruption in 2008. Then was elected as Member of Senate in 2009. This shift was driven by a deep commitment to national service and community development, values that continue to shape my work today.
As Chairman of Mehran Spice & Food Industries, I have played a pivotal role in establishing the company as a global leader. PAGE: How is your experience as a Pakistani industrialist in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia?
Gul Muhammad Lot: Our experience as a Pakistani industrialist in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been both rewarding and encouraging. We were granted an investor license by the Saudi Government in 2003, and by 2004, we had commenced construction of our factory. In 2005, we proudly began our business operations within the Kingdom.
We deeply appreciate the forward-thinking decision of the Saudi Government to open its doors to foreign investment. This initiative has had a significantly positive impact on the national economy by encouraging industrial development and creating a conducive environment for international investors.
The support we received from the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) was instrumental throughout our journey. Their professional approach and proactive resolution of potential barriers made the entire process smooth and investor-friendly. It is clear that the Kingdom is keenly focused on facilitating foreign investment to further strengthen its economy.
Having prior experience in setting up an industry in the Jebel Ali Free Zone, we found this to be a remarkable opportunity to enter and grow in one of the region’s most promising and expansive markets. The Kingdom’s strategic location, growing economy, and supportive regulatory framework have allowed us to expand our business successfully.
We remain grateful to the Saudi Government for its vision and continued commitment to fostering a thriving business environment. Mehran Spice & Food Industries is proud to contribute to this growth by delivering high-quality products like rice, spices, recipe mix, pickles, vermicillies, ketchup, sauces, frozen products, etc. With continued support, we aim to bring authentic flavors to every table across the Kingdom.
PAGE: How has Pakistan benefitted from Saudi investors?
Gul Muhammad Lot: Pakistan has significantly benefitted from growing investment ties with Saudi Arabia, particularly in sectors such as food processing and spices, where there is a high demand in the Saudi market. As a leading Pakistani spice company, we identified this opportunity early on and strategically positioned ourselves as a first entrant into the Saudi market. This move proved to be highly profitable, as Saudi Arabia’s large and diverse consumer base has a strong demand for high-quality, authentic spice products.
Recognizing the potential of our products and our commitment to quality, the Saudi government generously allocated an additional 10,000 square meters of industrial land to us at a very nominal rate. This support enabled us to expand our operations by establishing a state-of-the-art production facility and warehouse, enhancing our capacity to meet the growing demand in the region and ensuring timely delivery across the GCC.
In 2019, we received a trading license, which marked a significant milestone. Under the names Mehran Arabia Trading and Mehran Arabia Industry, we began not only distributing our own products but also offering distribution services for other high-quality goods within the Saudi market. This diversification strengthened our market presence and contributed to the broader economic exchange between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
As part of our commitment to local integration, we have also employed Saudi staff, who have proven to be responsible, dedicated, and professional. We are particularly pleased with the Saudi government’s support for female employment. Our female staff members have shown exceptional dedication and performance, contributing meaningfully to the success of our operations.
Overall, our journey in Saudi Arabia reflects the positive outcomes of Saudi-Pakistani investment cooperation. It is a testament to the opportunities that arise when governments and businesses work together toward mutual growth and development.
PAGE: Your perspective on mutual trade between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan?
Gul Muhammad Lot: Mutual trade between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan plays a vital role in strengthening the economic ties between the two brotherly nations. Pakistan relies heavily on oil imports from Saudi Arabia, which are essential for meeting its energy needs and supporting economic stability. In return, Pakistan exports a variety of goods to the Kingdom, including textiles, rice, fruits, and vegetables. Additionally, thousands of skilled and unskilled Pakistani workers contribute to Saudi Arabia’s labor market, sending back valuable remittances that support Pakistan’s economy.
Trade exhibitions serve as a key platform for enhancing commercial relations between the two countries. Mehran Spice and Food Industries actively participate in food exhibitions around the world, including those in Saudi Arabia. Such events provide opportunities to showcase Pakistani products, expand export markets, and build long-term business partnerships. These efforts not only promote the country’s rich culinary offerings but also strengthen its overall export base, fostering deeper economic collaboration and mutual growth.
Under the visionary leadership of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia is undergoing a historic transformation through modernization and industrial growth under Vision 2030. His progressive reforms have opened new doors for international trade, investment, and cultural exchange, positioning the Kingdom as a global economic hub. Mehran Spice and Food Industries proudly supports this vision by showcasing Pakistan’s rich culinary heritage in Saudi Arabia and beyond. Through such efforts, Mehran continues to strengthen bilateral trade, foster long-term partnerships, and contribute to shared prosperity.
PAGE: What is your standpoint on use of technology for trade between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan?
Gul Muhammad Lot: The use of technology in trade between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan is essential for achieving faster, more efficient, and transparent business operations. Through digital platforms, both countries can streamline processes like payments, logistics, and documentation, leading to quicker results and stronger business relationships. Technology also attracts greater investments, as it builds trust and improves overall efficiency. This digital transformation is key to expanding bilateral trade and economic growth.
Mehran Spice and Food Industries has recently implemented SAP, a leading enterprise resource planning system, which has significantly improved operational efficiency and decision-making. With such systems, businesses can manage supply chains, inventory, and exports more effectively. The younger, tech-savvy generation in both countries is further driving this digital shift, enhancing productivity and innovation. Embracing technology not only benefits individual companies but also strengthens the economic ties between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Our recently installed frozen food plant reflects Mehran’s commitment to innovation, enabling the production of premium frozen products with international standards. Alongside this, our German-engineered rice processing technology, supported by advanced machinery for spices and other food products, ensures maximum hygiene, efficiency, and consistency. These advancements strengthen our ability to diversify product offerings and expand into new markets. Quality and innovation remain the foundation of our continued global success.
