- Day’s activities reflect an enduring connection, and journey towards freedom unity, prosperity
Interview with Mr. Zaheer Ahmed, UAE-based Pakistani
Pakistan & Gulf Economist had an exclusive conversation with Mr Zaheer Ahmed about Pakistan Independence Day activities in the UAE. Following are the excerpts of the conversation:
I have been living in the UAE for last 15 years and witnessed many independence days here. I enjoy these events with the family and friends. It’s a unique opportunity to meet with the people and celebrate the event altogether which demonstrates bond among the country mates.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), home to a large Pakistanis, has been a great centre for these celebrations. This year, Pakistan Independence Day activities in the UAE are particularly reflecting the bond between the two countries and the continued contributions of the Pakistanis in the region. From grand flag-hoisting ceremonies to cultural events and community gatherings, the celebrations are a testament to Pakistan’s rich heritage and the enduring strength of its people.
Pakistan Independence Day, celebrated annually on August 14th, marks a significant milestone in the history of the country. It symbolises the birth of a new nation and the end of British colonial rule. For millions of Pakistanis living around the world, this day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by their ancestors, commemorate their heritage, and show pride in their national identity.
Cultural and Community Celebrations:
The Pakistani community in the UAE is diverse, encompassing people from various regions of Pakistan, each with its unique traditions and cultural heritage. This diversity is beautifully reflected in the cultural programmes organised around Independence Day. Cultural festivals, music concerts, and food fairs are held in several cities, showcasing the country’s rich traditions and artistic talents.
In Dubai, the Pakistani Social Centre hosts a vibrant cultural evening, complete with performances of traditional music, dance, and poetry. The youth, in particular, are active participants in these programmes, reflecting the growing importance of preserving Pakistan’s cultural heritage among the younger generation abroad.
In Sharjah, Pakistan Cultural Centre a mega event is organised on 14th August: Pakistanis with their families enjoy the event. The organisers arrange the musical evening filled with national and patriotic songs. Alongside, a food fiesta is also organised where people can enjoy the regional and national food for their nostalgia.
At Expo City:
Dubai will host a large-scale Pakistan Independence Day celebration on August 10th at Expo City. The event, titled “Jashn-e-Azaadi Pakistan 2025,” will feature cultural performances, entertainment, and community activities. Organised by Emirates Loves Pakistan and the Pakistan Association Dubai, the event aims to celebrate Pakistan’s heritage and the strong bond between the Pakistani community in the UAE and the host country.
Food and Cultural Exhibitions:
One of the key attractions of Pakistan Independence Day in the UAE is the abundance of Pakistani food festivals that take place during the celebrations. Pakistani restaurants across the UAE offer special Independence Day menus, featuring dishes from various regions of Pakistan. These food festivals are not only a culinary delight but also serve as an excellent opportunity to introduce the rich flavors of Pakistani cuisine to people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
In Abu Dhabi and Dubai, food stalls are served local favourites such as biryani, haleem, kebabs, samosas, and an array of traditional sweets like gulab jamun and jalebi. These festivities are allowed the Pakistani community to come together, enjoy their favorite dishes, and share a taste of home with their families and friends.
As Pakistan continues to grow and evolve, the Pakistani community in the UAE remains an important pillar, supporting its homeland while cherishing its rich cultural heritage. The Independence Day activities in the UAE are a reflection of this enduring connection, and the celebrations are a heartfelt reminder of the nation’s journey towards freedom, unity, and prosperity.
