The Countries Dominating the Europa League

Thanks largely to Sevilla’s six wins since their maiden victory in the 2005/06 tournament, Spain is quite comfortably the most successful country in the Europa League – or the UEFA Cup as it was called from 1971/72 to 2008/09. The trophy has been brought back to Spain a total of 13 times in the competition’s history. Aside from Sevilla, Atlético have also won it three times and they are joined by Real Madrid (2), Villareal (1) and Valencia (1).

The country’s total won’t be changing this season, but its place at the top of the list is also in no danger. This year’s final will be played between Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt and Scotland’s Rangers. Frankfurt have one win to their name from 1979/80 – accounting for a sixth of Germany’s total. Rangers getting their hands on the trophy come May 18 however would not just be a first for the club but also for Scotland.

A total of 29 clubs have won the tournament over the years, hailing from eleven different countries. Notably missing from the list though, as illustrated by our infographic, is France. Despite Ligue 1 belonging to the so-called ‘big 5’ European leagues, victory in Europe’s second-most prestigious international club competition has eluded them. It’s a similar story in the Champions League/European Cup, too. A French club has only lifted the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens once, in 1992/93 when Marseille beat AC Milan 2-1 in Munich.
