YouTube bans comments on all videos of children:
YouTube says it will switch off comments on almost all videos featuring under-18s, in an attempt to “better protect children and families”. Several brands stopped advertising on YouTube after discovering that paedophiles were leaving predatory comments on videos of children. YouTube had originally disabled comments on videos that were attracting predatory and obscene comments.

‘Useless slimming pills face fake Amazon reviews’ fine:
A company that sold “ineffective” fat-fighting herbal supplements is facing a $12.8m (£9.6m) fine for allegedly buying fake reviews on Amazon. The fine is part of a settlement deal Cure Encapsulations has reached with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Cure had paid a now defunct website for positive reviews to push claims its pills helped weight loss. The company has also been told to stop making “false and unsubstantiated” claims about one supplement.

Momo challenge: The anatomy of a hoax:
Following a flurry of scare stories, some schools have warned parents about the “momo challenge” — but fact-checkers say it is a hoax. The character, shown with bulging eyes, supposedly appears on WhatsApp and sets children dangerous “challenges” such as harming themselves. But charities say there have been no reports of anybody receiving messages or harming themselves as a result.

TikTok: Record fine for video sharing app over children’s data:
Short-form video sharing app TikTok has been handed the largest ever fine for a US case involving children’s data privacy. The company has agreed to pay $5.7m (£4.3m) and implement new measures to handle users who say they are under 13. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said the Musical.ly app, which was later acquired and incorporated into TikTok, knowingly hosted content published by underage users.

An Android phone that slides open to reveal a physical qwerty keyboard inside has launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The F(x)tec Pro1 phone also has a bespoke shutter button on the side to click when taking photos. The London start-up behind it said it wanted to “return the keyboard” to consumers. Other handsets with keyboards built in, from brands such as BlackBerry Mobile and Swiss firm Punkt, were also on show.

Google must provide details on Nest microphone error:
US senators have written to Google asking for more details about revelations that a hidden microphone had been built into its Nest devices. The existence of the microphone was revealed when Google announced that it would be enabling voice-activated features on the home alarm product The company then apologized for not disclosing the fact earlier, saying it had not been used “up to this point”.

Computer servers ‘stranded’ in space:
A pair of Hewlett Packard Enterprise servers sent up to the International Space Station in August 2017 as an experiment have still not come back to Earth, three months after their intended return. Together they make up the Spaceborne Computer, a Linux system that has supercomputer processing power. They were sent up to see how durable they would be in space with minimal specialist treatment.

Pokemon: Nintendo announces two new games, Sword and Shield, for the Switch:
Nintendo has unveiled the trailer for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, the next instalments in the franchise for its Switch console. In 2018, family-friendly remakes of the original Red and Blue games were released for the Switch and became huge hits. But Sword and Shield are brand new Pokemon games with new monsters to collect and new worlds to explore. They also mark the first ‘real’ Pokemon games for a home console. The Pokemon series made its name on handheld consoles and later on mobile phones in Pokemon Go.

OneWeb launches mega-constellation pathfinder satellites:
The first six satellites for OneWeb’s mega-constellation have launched on a Soyuz rocket from French Guiana. The spacecraft are the pathfinders in a network the London-based start-up is building to take high-speed broadband internet to every corner of the globe. Other companies have similar plans, but OneWeb believes it has first-mover advantage with an operational system. The Soyuz left its Sinnamary base at 21:37 GMT for a flight that lasted one hour and 22 minutes. Controllers in Virginia in the US, and in the UK capital, were primed to talk to the satellites as soon as they came off the top of the Russian rocket.

A new Energizer phone promises its battery will last up to 50 days on one charge. But this isn’t a slim, sleek new handset — tech fans are describing it as an “absolute unit” and the “thick boi” of the mobile world. The snappily named Power Max P18K Pop, made by Avenir Telecom, is certainly on the chunky side. Its makers say users can watch two days of video and listen to 100 hours of music before they’ll need to recharge.
