Pakistan Railways has rolled out “Pak Rail Live”, an app that enables train users in tracking the exact location of trains across the whole network. Uber VP meets with Asad Umar and other govt officials:
Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, Uber’s Vice President and Regional General Manager for Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, visited Pakistan recently to meet up with key government stakeholders in a bid to reaffirm Uber’s commitment to the local economy and explore mutually beneficial avenues for further growth. Careem partners with police to highlight importance of road safety:
To highlight the importance of road safety, Careem in collaboration with the Traffic Police initiated a campaign of distributing free helmets to motorcyclists in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. According to Motorway Police, around 15000 people die annually in Pakistan and 50 percent of the accidents are of bike riders, which could have been avoided with the use of helmets.

PTCL reports full year revenue growth for the first time since 2014:
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the country’s leading telecom and ICT services provider, has announced its financial results for the year ended December 31, 2018, at its Board of Directors’ meeting, held in Islamabad on February 12, 2019.PTCL Group’s revenue for the year 2018 has grown YoY by 8 percent to Rs. 126.2 billion as a result of positive contribution by all group companies. PTCL Group’s revenue growth in the fourth quarter accelerated to 13% YoY.

Apple to investigate Saudi app:
A Saudi Arabian app that can be used to track women and prevent them from travelling will be investigated by Apple, its chief executive has said.
In an interview with NPR, Tim Cook said he wasn’t aware of the Absher app but would look into it. The app, which offers access to government services, has been criticized by human rights groups.

Former Apple lawyer charged with insider trading:
US prosecutors have charged a former top Apple lawyer with insider trading. Gene Levoff is accused of using confidential information to trade the firm’s securities for personal gain. Mr Levoff, who was responsible for ensuring compliance with Apple’s insider trading policies, is accused of breaching those policies on several occasions. Apple fired him last year after being contacted by authorities and conducting an internal investigation.

Overwatch and Call Of Duty maker to cut 800 jobs:
Video games publisher Activision Blizzard has announced it will lay off about 800 people, despite reporting record revenue in 2018. The company made $7.5bn (£5.8bn) last year, up from about $7 billion in 2017. Its chief executive, Bobby Kotick, said the results were “the best in our history” but did not “realize our full potential”. Titles published by the Activision Blizzard group include Call Of Duty, Overwatch and Candy Crush Saga.

Elon Musk named as Twitter boss favourite:
Elon Musk has been named as Twitter boss Jack Dorsey’s favourite tweeter in an interview about how to tackle abuse. The singling out of the Tesla boss has raised eyebrows because Mr Musk’s tweets have often proved controversial. One tweet about taking Tesla private saw him lose his job as chairman, while another has led to a defamation case.

Teen has vaccinations after asking Reddit:
Ethan Lindenberger from Ohio asked social media site Reddit if he could have vaccines without parental consent. His mother would not give her permission, he wrote in the post, which had thousands of reactions. He learned he had to wait until he was 18 – which he did, and has now had five vaccinations so far. However, he told the Media his mother still does not agree with his choice, and also apologized for the way he described her online.

DJI makes drone safety improvements:
Drone-maker DJI is improving the technology that prevents them being flown near airports. The changes come after drones disrupted flights from the UK’s Gatwick airport in December. A more sophisticated geo-fencing system will create a 3D no-go zone surrounding runway flight paths and other sensitive facilities. This improves on the simple circular structures previously used to block such areas.

MPs immerse themselves in VR questions:
Experts have called for more regulation of immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).It comes as UK MPs open an inquiry into the effects of such technologies on individuals and society. They will also examine whether social media and gaming are addictive and harmful. In the first hearing on the issues, MPs were told more studies were needed on the effects of VR.

Ligue du LOL: Secret group of French journalists targeted women:
Several senior French journalists have been suspended or fired for allegedly co-ordinating online harassment through a private Facebook group. The largely-male Ligue du LOL (League of LOL) mocked women, including other journalists, with rape jokes and photoshopped pornographic images. Dozens of women have spoken out since the group was uncovered by the major French daily Libération. Libération’s online editor Alexandre Hervaud is among those suspended.

Russia considers ‘unplugging’ from internet:
Russia is considering whether to disconnect from the global internet briefly, as part of a test of its cyber-defences. The test will mean data passing between Russian citizens and organisations stays inside the nation rather than being routed internationally. A draft law mandating technical changes needed to operate independently was introduced to its parliament last year. The test is expected to happen before 1 April but no exact date has been set.
