Sindh bank and Summit bank merger approved by cabinet:
The merger between Sindh central and Summit bank has been approved. As per earlier reports, Summit Bank closed its operations on December 29 as part of its merger with Sindh Bank, as per State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) rules. The merger could, reportedly, make Sindh Bank the largest in all provinces. One banker predicted that it would have 500 branches across the country. With assets of Rs 300 million, the market value of Sindh Bank would amount to Rs 30 billion.

PPL to continue production from Sui mining lease for 6 more months:
Pakistan Petroleum Limited announced that it will continue the production of Sui Mining Lease for the coming six months. According to a notice to the bourse, PPL informed all the relevant stakeholders that the Government of Pakistan has allowed the company to continue production from the Sui Mining Lease for a period of six months with effect from 1st of December 2017. The company would have to renew or give up the lease on the said field by May 31, 2018.

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has allowed traders of Pakistan and China to trade different goods and services through Chinese currency, Yuan. Both public and private sector enterprises (i.e. both Pakistanis and Chinese) are free to choose CNY for bilateral trade and investment activities.

Two applications received for chairman’s vacant slot at PTA:
A former chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and a sitting Member Telecom of the Ministry of Information Technology are the front-runners for the chairmanship slot of the PTA. A man has been arrested after an alleged “swatting” prank call led to police shooting dead a 28-year-old man. Andrew Finch was shot at his front door on 28 December in Wichita, Kansas. Police surrounded the home after receiving a hoax emergency call from a man claiming to have shot dead his father and taken his family hostage.

AI chief demis hassabis made CBE:
British artificial intelligence researcher Demis Hassabis has been recognised on the New Year Honours list. Mr Hassabis is chief executive of DeepMind, which has developed software that can beat human experts at the complex board game Go. Youtube app removed from amazon fire tv kit early:
The YouTube app has been removed from Amazon’s Fire TV devices four days earlier than expected, as a dispute between Amazon and Google continues. Fire TV devices now encourage people to use the YouTube website in a web browser instead. Google had warned it would remove the YouTube app from Fire TV devices on 1 January.
