The poor use donkey cart as a kind of ambulance in such far-flung areas. After this, Pakistan & Gulf Economist (PAGE) moved to Multan to cover Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases (MIKD). MIKD is a 150 bedded tertiary care hospital for kidney diseases located on Muzaffargarh Road near Bahawalpur Bypass, Multan. MIKD is owned and fully funded by Government of Punjab and it is managed by The Indus Hospital. MIKD has developed its reputation to be one of the best healthcare facilities in South Punjab in a very short span of time after it was taken over by The Indus Hospital for management.
FILTER CLINIC (FC):
In filter clinic, patients are filtered as per their medical condition and specialty required for their treatment. Patients first come to registration counter No. 1 for token and registration. After registration, patients wait in their respective waiting areas (male and female waiting areas). Then patients are called for initial assessment (vital signs) by qualified nursing staff and after that their turn comes for Medical Officers. If patient does not need any tests and further consultation by consultant doctor, the medical officer prescribes medication and sends the patients to OPD pharmacy for medicines. If the problem of the patient is confirmed with the previous reports and needs consultation by consultant doctor, the patients is referred to Counter No. 3 for appointment with the required consultant. If the patient needs some tests (Laboratory, Ultrasound, X-ray, etc.), the MO prescribes the required tests and refers to the respective counters. After the test results are ready then MO checks the patient again. If patient needs further check up by consultant, the patient is referred to counter No. 3 for appointment with the required consultant and if the patient does not need consultation by consultant doctor, the MO prescribes medication for patient and sends home. On average, 200 patients visit FC every day. Serious patients are referred to counter No. 6 for emergency service.

CONSULTANT CLINIC (CC):
For CC new patients are referred from FC. Follow up patients directly get appointment from the counter No. 3. All patients first confirm their appointment from the counter No. 3 then wait for their turn. If the patients need further tests, the consultant orders tests. Patients go to the respective counters for diagnostic tests. After the results are ready then the consultants (Urologist or Nephrologist) decide whether patients need only medication for home or treatment in the ward or any surgery. If the patients need medicine for home, the consultant prescribes drugs in the HMIS and sends the patients to OPD pharmacy for medicines. If the patients need treatment in the ward or any surgery, the patients are referred to counter No. 4 for admission. If the patients need dialysis, the patients are referred by Nephrologist to counter No. 7 for appointment. On average, 120 patients visit CC every day.
EMERGENCY ROOM (ER):
ER is open 24/7 and serves serious patients and those who need urgent care and is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and care is provided by qualified and competent doctors and nursing staff under the supervision of consultants. Serious patients are taken on bed and proper care is provided .If any normal patient comes, he/she is referred to counter No. 3 after triage for consultation with Consultant.
DIAGNOSTICS SERVICES:
MIKD offers the best diagnostic facilities free of cost. Clinical Laboratory and Radiology Departments has latest equipment including 64 slice CT-Scan. All procedures and tests are performed in a very neat and clean and infection free environment. The follow is volume per day:
Laboratory: 675 tests per day
Ultrasound: 70 to 80 per day
X-Ray: 60 to 70 per day
CT: 12 to 15 daily
Other Radiology procedures: 15 daily
