Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Lahore recently installed the latest Linear Accelerator Machine and the inception is the facts result that the hospital has always been at the forefront of introducing the latest cancer treatment technology in the country.
Cancer is a complex disease, and the presence of the latest technology, machines and medicines is crucial in the treatment. A cancer patient may undergo radiation, chemotherapy or surgery depending on the nature of the disease during treatment. All three methods of cancer treatment are being innovated with each passing through research, which has reduced the side effects of cancer drugs, shortening the duration of treatment and improving outcomes.
In developed countries these facilities are also available to a common citizen, but in a country like Pakistan it has been quite difficult for a poor man because the technology was not available due to the high cost. But after the establishment of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center, this situation started to change as the hospital was trying to introduce modern cancer treatment technology in Pakistan and provide it equally for every special promise. Vulnerable patients are being provided with cancer treatment facilities that are not below their standard in any developed country in the world. Hospital construction has been completed for 25 years now and there are currently the best facilities in the world for cancer treatment that have been certified by an institution such as the Joint Commission International.
In line with its mission to provide cutting-edge cancer treatment technology in Pakistan, the latest radiation machineries have recently been deployed at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Clinical and Radiation Oncology Department, Lahore, to further enhance the quality of cancer treatment. The deployment would be extremely helpful in increasing the services to the patients. It is the first machine of its kind in Pakistan and Central Asia with the most advanced wide spectrum and cancer treatment technology including StereoTactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), StereoTactic Radio Surgery with Hyper Arc, Image Guided Radio Therapy and Rapid. Treatment can be provided through facilities such as Arc.
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center have successfully completed twenty-five years of providing treatment to cancer patients.
This is three times faster than traditional linear accelerator machines, a procedure that used to take up to half an hour and now will be possible in less than two minutes.
Radiation at less than one millimeter from this linear accelerator can be provided with the utmost accuracy, which helps keep healthy cells safe. It also has facilities such as Respiratory Gating, Klipso System, Robotic Treatment Couch and 4D gated cone beam CCT, making it possible to accurately estimate the movement and location of tumors. This is three times faster than traditional linear accelerator machines, a procedure that used to take up to half an hour and now will be possible in less than two minutes. Rapid radiation delivery also reduces the chances of tumor movement during treatment. With the help of this new linear accelerator, the accuracy and speed of radiation dose can now provide even more patients.
With the addition of this new machine, the Clinical and Radiation Oncology Department of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center has now become the largest and Modern Radiation Oncology Department across Pakistan. There are already four linear accelerator machines and all four are equipped with the latest technologies such as IMRT, IGRT and VMAT. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center, Lahore is Pakistan’s first charity hospital to receive the Gold Cell of Approval from Joint Commission International (JCI).
With the latest Linear Accelerator machine, more patients will now be offered treatment.
Along with Lahore, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Radiation Oncology Department of the Research Center, Peshawar is also providing services to patients with the help of two advanced linear accelerator machines. The Peshawar hospital is providing international quality facilities to patients in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and adjoining areas near their homes. The hospital has also received accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI) for establishing and maintaining high standards of care for patients.
The addition of this new machine to the Radiation Oncology Department on the eve of the hospital’s Silver Jubilee, where a new prospect of life for cancer patients across Pakistan, speaks to the commitment of the hospital’s management and staff is proof that it is across Pakistan. The management of the hospital endeavour to let any cancer patients to have the latest advance facility and this hospital will continue to serve the nation with the same spirit for the next 25 years.
