Nestlé Pakistan marked a key milestone in its climate action journey with the inauguration of the Biomass Steam Plant at its Sheikhupura site by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Advancing regenerative food systems for better lives and livelihoods

Guided by its sustainability focus areas of climate action, regenerative agriculture and circularity, Nestlé Pakistan continues to advance initiatives that connect cleaner energy, responsible resource use and stronger farming practices. Alongside investments such as the Sheikhupura Biomass Steam Plant, the company is working with farmers to promote regenerative agriculture practices that strengthen soil health, improve water efficiency and support biodiversity. To date, Nestlé Pakistan has initiated the implementation of regenerative agriculture practices on over 125 farms of maize, alfalfa, oats, sorghum and wheat across Punjab to promote soil health and conserve water.
Creating Shared Value through cleaner manufacturing
On 31st July 2026, the stone laying and inauguration of the Sheikhupura Biomass Steam Plant by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, alongside Nestlé Pakistan’s leadership including CEO and Managing Director Jason Avanceña, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Sheikh Waqar Ahmad and Head of Technical Faisal Nadeem, marked an important milestone in advancing cleaner manufacturing in Pakistan. The event reflected how sustainability commitments can translate into practical action when innovation is connected with local resources. Nestlé’s Sheikhupura Biomass Steam Plant is a USD 4.5 million investment that will use 72,000 tons of agricultural residue annually to generate 30 tons of steam per hour and reduce approximately 24,345 tons of carbon emissions each year. It is also expected to generate estimated annual fuel cost savings of around USD 2.15 million. The plant is designed to support cleaner manufacturing, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to Pakistan’s climate action priorities.
Delivering on Nestlé’s Net Zero Roadmap
The plant contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 13 on Climate Action, and supports Nestlé’s Net Zero Roadmap. Under this roadmap, the company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 from 2018 levels and reach net zero by 2050 at the latest. By 2025, Nestlé had achieved more than a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the 2018 baseline.
Scaling solar energy in manufacturing
Nestlé Pakistan has expanded solarization across its manufacturing footprint, with more than 9.6 MW of installed solar capacity across its sites. This includes 6.1 MW at Sheikhupura and 2.8 MW at Kabirwala, helping reduce dependence on grid electricity while supporting lower-carbon manufacturing operations.
From 2021 to 2025, Nestlé facilitated dairy farmers in installing solar systems at 135 dairy farms.
Biomass steam plant at Kabirwala
At the Kabirwala factory, a 20 ton/hour biomass steam plant is helping replace fossil fuel-based thermal energy with renewable steam. The plant utilizes agricultural residue to provide more than 75% of the factory’s thermal energy and reduces over 10,500 tons of CO₂e emissions annually, further strengthening Nestlé Pakistan’s biomass-led climate action agenda.
Climate-smart biogas digesters for supplier farms
Between 2021 and 2025, Nestlé supported the installation of 25 biogas digesters at supplier farms.
These projects by Nestlé Pakistan directly support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 7 Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 15 Life on Land and SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals.
