More training and quality control system should be put in place for HVACR sector growth

Interview with Muhammad Abbas Sajid — Chief Executive, (Engineering Services)

Muhammad Abbas Sajid graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi in 1983 and studied Business Management at the Joseph M. Katz School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He is the owner and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a mechanical engineering company by the name of Engineering Services dealing in air conditioning, plumbing, fire fighting and telecommunication systems since 1984. He is also the owner and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CNG 2000 PLUS, JANS CNG, Carnation Banquet and Casamento Banquet. He has served as General Secretary of CNG Station Owners’ Association of Pakistan, General Secretary of Pakistan Society of Plumbing Professionals and Member of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Committees on Environment, Petroleum and Petroleum Products and Foreign Investment. He is a senior member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and has served as the Sub Regional Chair for South Asia for ASHRAE. He is the founding member of the ASHRAE Pakistan Chapter and was its first General Secretary. He has also served the ASHRAE Pakistan Chapter as its Vice President, President elect and President. He is the recipient of Chapter Service award and Regional Service award from ASHRAE Atlanta, USA.
Mr. Sajid is one of the most respected members of the Pakistan HVACR Society and has served the Society diligently for the past 24 years and was instrumental in the tremendous growth and prosperity of the Society with his exceptional leadership qualities.
He served as the President of Pakistan HVACR Society from 2013-15 and is currently the Chief Organizer of the 26th HVACR & Building Services Expo to be held in Karachi from 13 to 15 February, 2019.[/box]

PAGE: Tell us something about the formation of Pakistan HVACR Society and its initial days:

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: Pakistan HVACR Society came into existence in 1993 when the need was felt to have all the professionals connected to the HVACR field come together and represent the HVACR community and help the government form policies conducive to the proper growth and development of the HVACR field in Pakistan. There were very few companies of HVACR at that time but after the formation of the Society, a direction was set for the growth of this industry which now ranks among the leading sector in the Building Services of Pakistan.

PAGE: What are the future aims and objectives of the Society?

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: The future aims of the Society include the encouragement of engineering students and young engineers to come into this field and take it forward. There should also be certification and standardization programs for the industry to help alleviate the standard of our engineering projects. Training and Quality Control systems should be put in place for the HVACR sector. A constant contact and dialogue should be maintained with the government to help formulate favorable policies for the HVACR sector.

PAGE: How do you see the relationship between Pakistan HVACR Society and ASHRAE and how can it be made more beneficial for the members of Pakistan HVACR Society?

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: The relationship between Pakistan HVACR and ASHRAE is essential for the growth of HVACR sector in Pakistan as ASHRAE is the greatest source of knowledge and provides huge resources in terms of publications, trainings, standardization and most importantly the Distinguished Lecturer Program. It provides the local engineers and professionals with the latest knowledge and developments in the HVACR sector around the world.

PAGE: Tell us something about the technical programs of the Society:

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: The Pakistan HVACR Society has a monthly technical program at all the three Chapters of the Society in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad along with the Annual Conference along with the Expo every year on a rotational basis between Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Different training and product presentations are also held periodically by the Society to keep the engineers abreast with the latest developments in different fields of HVACR.

PAGE: What is the election procedure and what is the tenure of Executive Council and Society President and Office Bearers?

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: Elections for the 18 members Executive Council of the Society are held every two years. Once the Executive Council is elected, it in turn elects the office bearers of the Society like the President, Senior Vice President, Vice President, General Secretary, Finance Secretary etc.

PAGE: Tell us something about the family and social programs of Society and its impact on the members?

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: The Society holds regular programs for members and their families which creates a very healthy atmosphere within the Society and its members.

PAGE: How can the Society influence the engineering policies of the Government of Pakistan?

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: It is one of the foremost functions of the Society to regularly interact with the government and help it to formulate favorable policies for the furtherance and growth of the different segments of the Society like manufacturing, consultancy, contracting, trading, vendor development etc.

PAGE: What do you think about the progress of Annual Expos of the Society?

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: The Annual Expos of the Society are held every year on a rotational basis in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and are eagerly looked forward by both the local as well as international exhibitors who want to exhibit and introduce their products to the engineering community and end users of Pakistan. The Expos have really done well and grown over the years from a very modest beginning in 1993 to having over 300 exhibitors in 2019.

PAGE: Tell us something about the Society publications:

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: The Society brings out Newsletters and Annual Journal which contains technical publications and news about both the previous as well as future activities of the Pakistan HVACR Society.

PAGE: Does the Society take advantage of social media and website to propagate itself?

Muhammad Abbas Sajid: The Society has an active website and presence on Facebook and is also launching a YouTube Channel shortly.
