Pakistan on the right track of shining future

Interview with Lt. Col (R) Dr Malik Ahmed Saeed — Administrative Superintendent LRBT Hospital, Korangi Karachi

PAGE: Tell me something about yourself and your career, please:

Malik Ahmed Saeed: Talking about myself, I felt narcissistic so I asked some friends, family and colleagues. Their responses were as follows:

– A veteran with a world of knowledge, who can write a very interesting memoir [My Friends]

– An Army man tough on the outside, soft on the inside. A Messiah amongst us, being a Doctor by profession [My Colleagues]

– Our Dad, has sacrificed his life and career for our wellbeing; he is our living breathing superhero [My three children, two sons and a daughter]

– A man who is an avid traveler; who just doesn’t enjoy the journey but lives it to the fullest, with me as a companion,(in all 50 countries we have been to) – both in journey of life as well as the world [My wife]

– An elder brother who always stood by us as a best friend and a fatherly figure [sisters]

Combining words of the people around me; I believe I have lived a full life, achieved a lot but have lots more to explore as they say the world is your oyster.

PAGE: How do you celebrate Independence Day at LRBT?

Malik Ahmed Saeed: It is a celebration of our freedom; and that’s how we celebrate it with freedom of speech and freedom to express passion for our beloved nation. At LRBT, it is a day filled with multiple festivities; starting with Flag Hoisting and National Anthem, remembering the sacrifices made by many, singing of patriotic songs, ending with cake cutting and light illumination. The whole hospital is jubilant and enjoys the auspicious occasion with a patriotic spirit.

PAGE: Is Pakistan of today different from Pakistan of 1947?

Malik Ahmed Saeed: I was born 9 years after the birth of this great nation, Pakistan, hence no recollection of the events leading to the evolution of Pakistan. I have heard from my ancestors and read of the sacrifices made by all, under the guardianship of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, we got this nation as a gift. However a child’s perspective is much different from an adult. I have, through the years, seen the ups and downs of the country, may it be wars, natural calamities or financial instability, but the Pakistani nation has stood up to it and have also seen the resilience and response to the different events the nation has gone through. It has led me to the unwavering belief in this nation and the fortitude of its people.

PAGE: Have we made headway as a nation?

Malik Ahmed Saeed: In the past, we have made many headway but ended up losing our way due to lack of unified clarity and destabilizing events. But I feel, we are now headed in the right direction; it will be tough, it’s an uphill task but we will trek through the hard times and find the shining light of success soon. The young generation is learning from past experiences. Remedial measures are being taken.

PAGE: Where do you see Pakistan ten years down the line?

Malik Ahmed Saeed: A country which has deserts, hills, long coastal belt, 5 out of 14 mountain peaks above 8,000 meters, mountain ranges, all encompassed in 881,013 sq kms and with over 227 million people, is a hub of opportunity. Having seen all of this country with my own eyes, and comparing with the 50 countries I have been to, I feel Pakistan will be making a name for itself, in all walks of life. We had small bursts of achievements but in the future Pakistanis will be toppers in all fields; medical, engineering, IT, finance, music, movies. You name it and we will be through and the main workforce will increase in digital awareness of the masses. It is my firm conviction that Pakistan will prosper and thrive in the not so distant future, given all the natural resources, geographical location and strong people to utilize these for the progression of Pakistan.
