Turkey is the country with the highest share of mobile bankers, with 85 percent of respondents saying it was how they carried out their transactions, according to the latest data from the Statista Global Consumer Survey. Nigeria and South Africa came next in line, with similarly high figures for mobile banking, at 82 percent and 79 percent respectively. For all three, the figures for classic online banking tell a slightly different story, with only 48 percent of Turkish respondents using a PC or laptop for their banking, versus 32 percent in Nigeria and 43 percent in South Africa. The writers of Statista’s report ‘The rise of ecommerce across Africa’, explain that this is partly due to the relative affordability of mobile devices versus computers, laptops or tablets, and that as of 2021, the continent counted 481 million mobile internet users.

The U.S. and UK on the other hand saw lower rates of mobile banking usage, at only 58 percent, and 65 percent respectively. Online banking was carried out by 46 percent of Americans, and 47 percent of Brits. And what about going into a branch? According to our data, the country with the highest share of people going into the shop was Nigeria, at 68 percent, while Switzerland had very few people making the journey, at only 22 percent.
