Samsung May Release an Entry-Level 5nm Smartphone Chip Next Week:

When a new generation of chipset technology is introduced, it rolls out to flagship or top-of-the-line devices first before making it to the affordable and cheaper ones. Exynos 2100 was Samsung’s first 5nm flagship smartphone chip in 2020 but the technology soon made it to the company’s first mid-range chip, the Exynos 1080. Now the company plans to introduce the 5nm chip technology to entry-level smartphone chips if a new leak from tipster Ice Universe is to be believed. He believes that Samsung is working on a 5nm chip for entry-level phones and it will be lower-end than the Exynos 1080.

Karachi Court Fines Mobile Manufacturer For Selling Faulty Phone to a Man:

A Consumer Court in Karachi has imposed a financial penalty on a mobile phone manufacturing company for delivering a faulty mobile phone to a customer. According to details, a man from Karachi had filed a petition against a mobile manufacture, contending that he had bought a phone worth Rs. 15,000 in July last year but the mobile phone turned out to be faulty as it kept restarting itself.

META Trademark’s Real Owner Asks Zuckerberg’s Meta to Pay $20 Million:

CEO Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, last week announced that all Facebook-owned subsidiaries will be collectively called Meta. However, it has come to light that an Arizona-based startup, Meta PC, had already applied for the trademark “META” a couple of months before Zuckerberg’s announcement. Data with the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) shows that Meta PC had actually applied for the “META” trademark on 23 August this year. On the other hand, Meta, previously known as Facebook, had filed the request for the “META” trademark on 28 October.

Boeing Gets Approval for its Satellite Internet Project:

Boeing has finally received the green light for its satellite internet project that was first proposed in 2017. Boeing can now start building, launching, and operating its own broadband internet through satellites, just like SpaceX. The aircraft company wants to launch 132 satellites into low Earth orbit at a height of 1,056 kilometers. Another group of 15 satellites will go higher into the “non-geostationary orbit” at a height of 44,221 km.

Facebook has come up with a new way of helping content creators avoid Apple’s App Store fee. The social media platform has launched a new bonus program in an effort to bring more creators to its platform. This bonus program is a web form for subscriptions that let creators get their fan subscriptions outside an app through Facebook Pay. This allows creators to avoid Apple’s 30% commission on in-app purchases.

Huawei Mate 50 May Launch in Early 2022 with Snapdragon 898:

Huawei Mate 50’s launch has been ambiguous the whole year due to supply constraints and the US ban. We have seen several reports earlier pointing at possible launch dates but one thing common among them is that the launch has been delayed to 2022. Now a newer report from reliable tipster Digital Chat Station says that Huawei’s next flagship series will launch in Q1 2022. The tipster did not mention a precise launch date, but if previous reports are anything to go by, then we can expect a March 2022 launch.

Facebook’s metaverse plans labelled as ‘dystopian’ and ‘a bad idea’:

One of Facebook’s earliest investors has labelled the social media giant’s plans for a metaverse as “dystopian”. Meta, as Facebook is now known, is investing billions in the project. But Roger McNamee told the BBC: “It’s a bad idea and the fact we are all sitting and looking at this like it’s normal should be alarming everyone.” Meta’s chief product officer Chris Cox told attendees at the Web Summit in Lisbon that the idea would make “the internet less flat”.

EA says NFTs are part of the future of games industry:

Game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has told investors that collectible NFTs are “an important part of the future of our industry”. NFTs have erupted in popularity in recent months as a way to buy and sell digital-only art and collectible items. EA makes the Fifa football series, which uses “card packs” to “collect” players in its Ultimate Team mode. Chief executive Andrew Wilson told investors he believes Fifa players want to see NFTs in the franchise.

New York’s next mayor wants to be paid in Bitcoin:

Eric Adams, mayor-elect for New York City, has said he would like his first three pay checks in bitcoin. The former police captain was elected this week to take over at the end of mayor Bill de Blasio’s term in January. Mr Adams said on social media that he wanted to signal his intention to make New York the “centre of the cryptocurrency industry”. The value of bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, has been highly volatile, since it was created in 2009.

Nintendo warns chip shortage will hit Switch sales:

Nintendo has lowered forecasts for sales of its Switch handheld games console by 1.5 million units. The Kyoto-based game giant now says it expects to sell 24 million units this financial year – having previously forecast sales of 25.5 million units. The Animal Crossing maker said the new forecast was because of a change in its production plan, due to the effects of the worldwide semiconductor shortage.

Climate change: Facebook fails to flag denial, study finds:

Climate change denial is spreading unchecked on Facebook, two studies by disinformation researchers have found. The Center for Countering Digital Hate and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue said less than 10% of misleading posts were marked as misinformation. And the CCDH researchers linked the majority of these to just 10 publishers.

Alec Baldwin has deactivated his Twitter account following reaction to a joke he made about “switching accents”. The 30 Rock actor’s wife, Hilaria, sparked controversy in December after she was accused of faking her Spanish accent and heritage. Database firm Clearview AI told to remove photos taken in Australia:

A firm which claims to have a database of more than 10 billion facial images has breached Australia’s privacy laws, Australian regulators say. Clearview AI lets law enforcement agencies search its database of faces. But the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) ordered it to stop collecting photos taken in Australia and remove ones already in its collection. A lawyer representing the firm said it would seek a review of the decision.
