Whatsapp flaw ‘puts words in your mouth’:
A newly-released tool that exploits a vulnerability in Facebook’s WhatsApp allows you to “put words in people’s mouths”, researchers say.
A team from cybersecurity firm Checkpoint has demonstrated how the tool can be used to alter the text within quoted messages, making it look as if a person had said something they did not. Researcher Oded Vanunu told the BBC the tool made it possible for “malicious actors” to manipulate conversations on the platform.

Three Ireland wrongly bills customers for data roaming fees:
Three Ireland has apologised after adding bogus roaming fees to customers’ bills. In some cases, subscribers had been told they had been charged more than €160 ($179; £147) for large amounts of data use that exceeded their allowance. Many were alerted to the charge by a series of text messages from the firm, and then found that their service had been suspended as a consequence. The company has blamed a system upgrade error. It added on social media that it was currently trying to identify which customers had been affected and would refund them in due course.

Remember how outlandish the first Samsung Galaxy Note looked when it was unveiled in 2011? NHS to set up national artificial intelligence lab:
The NHS in England is setting up a national artificial intelligence laboratory to enhance care of patients and research. The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, said AI had “enormous power” to improve care, save lives and ensure doctors had more time to spend with patients. He has announced £250m will be spent on boosting the role of AI within the health service. However, AI will pose new challenges including protecting patient data.

Microsoft workers ‘listen’ to some translated skype calls:
Microsoft workers occasionally listen to real Skype conversations that have been processed by translation software, it has been revealed. According to tech site Motherboard, some contractors for Microsoft review such conversations to check the quality of translations. However, the fact that humans may listen in to calls is not explicitly stated in Skype’s terms and conditions. Microsoft said it had users’ permission to collect and process their data.

South Wales police to use facial recognition app on phones:
A three-month trial of a new police facial recognition app which prompted a legal challenge will get under way this month. South Wales Police has said it will give 50 officers the app. The force’s use of facial recognition technology prompted a legal challenge by a man whose picture was taken by officers while he was out shopping. Some other forces have already trialled the technology including the Metropolitan Police.

British airways passengers stranded after it failures:
British Airways says it has fixed the IT glitch which caused more than 100 flights to be cancelled and more than 200 others to be delayed. The airline said flights were returning to normal but warned that there may be “knock-on operational disruption” .At least 117 flights had been cancelled at Heathrow Airport, with 10 cancelled at Gatwick Airport. The problem had caused BA to revert to using manual systems for check-in at airports, causing long queues.

Facebook briefly removes area 51 event ‘by accident’:
A Facebook page encouraging people to storm the so-called Area 51 US Air Force base was removed from the social network at the weekend – but has now been reinstated. It was removed by “mistake”, a spokeswoman for Facebook said. The page’s creator had received a message on Saturday saying his event broke Facebook’s community standards. Two million people have indicated they will attend, but the US Air Force has warned people not to go near the base.

Amazon Alexa: Luxembourg watchdog in discussions about recordings:
Luxembourg’s data privacy watchdog says it is in discussions with Amazon about voice recordings made of customers who have used the firm’s Alexa smart assistant. The regulator is the lead supervisory authority for the company in the EU, meaning that it co-ordinates investigations into the business on behalf of the other member states. At this point it has not launched a formal privacy probe. Amazon declined to comment. But a spokesman for the National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) said that citizens could “file a compliant with our authority or his/her national supervisory authority” if they had concerns.
