LG unveils curved gaming monitors to compete against Samsung’s offerings:
Just like Samsung did recently, LG is using its prowess in the television segment to unveil a new line of curved gaming monitors. The two monitors cater to G-Sync and FreeSync each and feature a curved panel for a more immersive gaming experience. The monitors come with an ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio, coupled with narrow bezels for an even more premium look. They have IPS panels, thankfully, rather than TN, and come with 3440 x 1440 resolution or just over 2K.

Acer Predator Triton 900 is a true ‘portable’ gaming beast:
You thought Predator X21 was ridiculous? Acer has a whole new thing coming that blows the x21 out of the water. The Predator Triton 900 apparently wants to break a bunch of records. The display, for example, can be titled on either side on its hinges, or brought physically closer to the user. It should support tablet mode, too. The display itself comes with 4K UHD resolution and has support for Nvidia’s G-Sync. Below the display sits an RGB-backlit mechanical keyboard, with a trackpad on the side, which can switch to a numpad if the situation demands.

Google’s wear os 3.0 brings major UI changes:
In order to give its wearable (read: smartwatch) operating system more of a chance against WatchOS, Google is updating its Wear OS with some substantial UI overhauls. It is the third major update that Google has brought to the platform, to-date. The new Wear OS also returns to the first-generation of the Wear OS in some ways. In Wear OS 2.0, when you swipe to the left or right, you change watch faces.

Pakistan-made slide app to be acquired by a Korean firm:
Slide, a popular lockscreen mobile app that serves up curated content on your device, is all set to be acquired by Buzzvil, a South Korean firm that bills itself as the world’s biggest mobile lockscreen platform. Slide was developed by Junaid Malik and his team from Pakistan in 2016. Since then, it went on to become a leading lockscreen app in both Pakistan and India.

Sony announces its first oled flagship with Xperia xz3:
Sony has officially revealed the new XZ3 after weeks of rumors and leaks and while it does not bring a whole lot of improvements over the XZ2, there are still a few things that are new with the XZ3. Talking about the design, nothing much has changed over the XZ2. It still features the new, more rounded off design which does provide better grip over the phone in the hand. There’s glass on the back which is a premium touch.

Samsung to launch 8k QLED TVs next month:
After months of anticipation and demonstrating concepts, Samsung is finally taking the covers off of its first range of 8K QLED TVs that’s meant to actually be released in the near future. The QLED TVs will be launched in 65″, 75″, 82″ and 85″ sizes. The flagship here is undoubtedly the Q900R, supporting HDR10+ which automatically optimizes content for brightness and contrast and up to 4000 nits (!) of peak brightness.

Nikon’s D3500 is a cheap entry level DSLR:
After unveiling its flagship mirrorless Z6 and Z7 cameras recently, Nikon is back this time with something for a more entry-level crowd. Its new D3500 is the successor to the popular D3400 and aims to deliver without breaking the bank. Design-wise, the D3500 is two ounces lighter than before and has a deeper grip. The controls have been conveniently moved alongside the 921,000-dot LCD, which measures 3-inch and is fixed (no touchscreen either, understandably).

Asus’s latest ZenBooks come with minimal bezels and latest intel processors:
Asus may not be considered one of the pioneers of the PC market anymore, though, it is proving to be a worthy name with the announcement of their first Intel Whiskey Lake laptops. The new ZenBooks 13, 14 and 15 are arguably its main series of machines, and now feature a fairly modern-looking design with virtually no bezels (leading to a 94% screen-to-body ratio) and a chassis which measures at most 0.7-inch.

HTC’s u12 life might be the perfect midranger:
HTC has been struggling a lot in the smartphone market, especially with their flagship devices. Their mid rangers, however, have been quite popular with most people. Acer is going all in with the gaming narrative at the IFA event, announcing four high-end gaming monitors catering to both Nvidia and AMD users. Its Predator monitor comes with G-Sync support, which is ideal for owners of a high-end Nvidia GeForce card. Similarly, the three Nitro series monitors support FreeSync, which is ideal for AMD Radeon graphics card owners.

A university in Canada has developed a tablet with a flexible screen that can rolled up. “We were inspired by ancient scrolls because their form allows for a more natural, uninterrupted experience of long visual timelines,” says Dr Roel Vertegaal. 8K TVs unveiled by Samsung and LG at Ifa tech show:
The world’s two bestselling television-makers are showing off rival 8K screens at the Ifa tech show in Berlin. The TVs have four times as many pixels as 4K sets and 16 times as many as 1080p high definition ones. The pitch is that this both presents more detail and allows their owners to sit closer to the action. But while Samsung is putting its creation on sale next month, LG is not convinced the public is ready for the tech yet.

New York renamed ‘Jewtropolis’ in map hack:
New York City was briefly renamed “Jewtropolis” in mapping software used by social media site Snapchat and others. The company called it an act of “vandalism” and said it worked with its partner Mapbox to “get this fixed immediately”. In a statement, Snap said the defacement was “deeply offensive”. Mapbox called it an act of “hate speech” but added that the issue had been resolved “within an hour”.

Celebgate hacker jailed over Jennifer Lawrence hack:
A man who hacked into the Apple iCloud accounts of Hollywood stars, including Jennifer Lawrence, has been sentenced to eight months in prison in the US. The notorious Celebgate hack resulted in nude photos and videos of Lawrence and other celebrities stolen and posted online. George Garofano was one of four people charged in the 2014 hacking scandal. Three others have already been sentenced to terms of between nine and 18 months in prison. Garofano, aged 26, had admitted accessing usernames and passwords by sending out emails in which he posed as a member of Apple’s security team.

Google has disputed claims from President Donald Trump that it did not promote his State of the Union address. President Trump posted a video on Twitter he said provided evidence the search giant had not featured his 2017 speech. In response, Google said this speech had been to Congress and therefore not a State of the Union address.

I have just been on a tour of a couple of hot new tech companies. Each had motivational posters on the walls. One had a bring your dog to work policy. The other had kitchens with free food on every floor. Both featured groups of young people from many countries all conversing in English. This wasn’t Silicon Valley but Berlin, which now seems ready to stake a claim to be one of Europe’s top tech hubs.

Air Canada app data breach involves passport numbers:
Air Canada’s app has suffered a data breach resulting in the suspected loss of thousands of its customers’ personal details. The airline has warned that users who had entered their passport details into the product may have had that data stolen. Experts warn that the theft of such information would pose a serious ID fraud risk. The firm has also been criticised for its relatively weak password system.

Elon musk reignites twitter slur controversy:
Elon Musk has tweeted again about a man he had previously accused of being a child abuser. “You don’t think it’s strange he hasn’t sued me? He was offered free legal services,” Tesla’s chief posted. The tweet comes more than a month after Mr Musk apologized to the British diving expert Vern Unsworth for calling him a “pedo”.

Dyson gears up for electric car testing:
Dyson has unveiled plans for a 10-mile test track in Wiltshire where its new electric cars will be put through their paces. The track and other facilities are part of a plan to start selling a “radical” electric car from 2021. The company best known for its vacuums and domestic appliances bought the disused airfield at Hullavington two years ago. Dyson has already renovated two hangars built in 1938 at the 517-acre site.

Chinese hotel group investigates possible leak of millions of guests’ data:
A Chinese hotel group is investigating the possible leak of millions of customers’ records, which appear to be for sale on the internet. An advert is offering the 140 gigabyte data trove in exchange for Bitcoin on a dark web forum. Security experts believe the firm’s database may have been accidentally uploaded to the internet. Huazhu Hotels told the Media in a statement that it “called the police without any delay”.
