Samsung is Working on a Self-Healing Oleophobic Coating for Smartphones:

With the display being one of the more important components in their flagship phones, Samsung is enhancing the protection standards of these devices by introducing a new type of oleophobic coating. The oleophobic coating consists of a thin layer applied on top of a smartphone display to keep fingerprints off. It is now an inevitable addition in most modern smartphones, which is why it is not mentioned too often.

AliPay Pakistan to Start Its Operations By the End of This Year:

Alibaba’s Alipay, the online and mobile payments system behind Aliexpress and Alibaba platforms, is going to start its operations in Pakistan by the end of this year. This revelation was made by Mr Irfan Wahab Khan, Telenor Pakistan’s CEO.

The Note 9 may be fresh off the oven, but that hasn’t stopped the leaks from coming in about the Samsung Galaxy S10 (or the S10+ to be specific). More Security Issues Discovered in Intel Processors:

Today, Intel detailed a new set of processor vulnerabilities in their press release. They allow hackers to steal info stored on clouds and on computers. Discovered and reported to Intel back in January this year, it comes in three different variants. The company says that most users would not be affected by these vulnerabilities, thanks to updates released earlier this year, and more updates coming out now.

Mystery Russian satellite’s behaviour raises alarm in US:

A mysterious Russian satellite displaying “very abnormal behaviour” has raised alarm in the US, according to a State Department official. “We don’t know for certain what it is and there is no way to verify it,” said assistant secretary Yleem Poblete at a conference in Switzerland on 14 August. She voiced fears that it was impossible to say if the object may be a weapon.

Myanmar Rohingya: Facebook ‘still hosts hate speech’:

More than 1,000 anti-Rohingya posts featuring calls for their murder among other hate speech were live on Facebook last week, according to Reuters. A probe by the news agency indicates that the network is still being used to encourage violence against the Muslim group in Myanmar despite the tech firm promising to tackle the issue. It said some of the material had been online for six years.

Children ‘at risk of robot influence’:

Forget peer pressure, future generations are more likely to be influenced by robots, a study suggests. The research, conducted at the University of Plymouth, found that while adults were not swayed by robots, children were. The fact that children tended to trust robots without question raised ethical issues as the machines became more pervasive, said researchers.

Twitter suspends Alex Jones for one week:

Twitter is blocking the right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones from posting to its platform for a week. The InfoWars broadcaster’s past tweets will, however, remain viewable to others while his account is locked in a “read-only” mode. The social network has not confirmed what prompted the action.

Virgin Media broadband teams ‘left holes in walls’:

Virgin Media has been accused of leaving holes in people’s walls and not following up complaints to fix the damage. One customer said he has so far waited six weeks to have a 10in (25.4cm) crater-like hole repaired. Complaints left on social media often say that requests for calls or web chats with Virgin have gone unfulfilled.

Wi-fi could be used to detect weapons and bombs:

Ordinary wi-fi could be used to detect weapons and explosives in public places, according to a study led by the Rutgers University in New Jersey. Wireless signals can penetrate bags to measure the dimensions of metal objects or estimate the volume of liquids, researchers claim. Initial tests appeared to show that the system was at least 95% accurate.

Tesla ‘to be probed by regulators’ over privatisation plan:

Shares in Tesla have fallen 4% on reports that US regulators are seeking to question executives at the firm about its privatisation plans. Fox News tweeted that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had sent subpoenas to the electric carmaker and was “ramping up” its investigation. Last week, boss Elon Musk said he was considering taking Tesla private, but some have questioned his intentions.

Reddit sleuth identifies car part, leading to hit-and-run arrest:

US Police have made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run case after an obscure part of a car headlight was identified by a social media user. Washington State Police appealed on Twitter for information after a cyclist was hit by an unidentified black vehicle. Officers shared a photograph of a small piece of metal recovered at the scene.
