Mystery Russian satellite’s behaviour raises alarm in US:
A mysterious Russian satellite displaying “very abnormal behaviour” has raised alarm in the US, according to a State Department official. “We don’t know for certain what it is and there is no way to verify it,” said assistant secretary Yleem Poblete at a conference in Switzerland on 14 August. She voiced fears that it was impossible to say if the object may be a weapon.

Myanmar Rohingya: Facebook ‘still hosts hate speech’:
More than 1,000 anti-Rohingya posts featuring calls for their murder among other hate speech were live on Facebook last week, according to Reuters. A probe by the news agency indicates that the network is still being used to encourage violence against the Muslim group in Myanmar despite the tech firm promising to tackle the issue. It said some of the material had been online for six years.

Forget peer pressure, future generations are more likely to be influenced by robots, a study suggests. The research, conducted at the University of Plymouth, found that while adults were not swayed by robots, children were. The fact that children tended to trust robots without question raised ethical issues as the machines became more pervasive, said researchers.

Twitter is blocking the right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones from posting to its platform for a week. Virgin Media has been accused of leaving holes in people’s walls and not following up complaints to fix the damage. One customer said he has so far waited six weeks to have a 10in (25.4cm) crater-like hole repaired. Ordinary wi-fi could be used to detect weapons and explosives in public places, according to a study led by the Rutgers University in New Jersey. Wireless signals can penetrate bags to measure the dimensions of metal objects or estimate the volume of liquids, researchers claim. Initial tests appeared to show that the system was at least 95% accurate.

Shares in Tesla have fallen 4% on reports that US regulators are seeking to question executives at the firm about its privatisation plans. Fox News tweeted that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had sent subpoenas to the electric carmaker and was “ramping up” its investigation. US Police have made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run case after an obscure part of a car headlight was identified by a social media user. Washington State Police appealed on Twitter for information after a cyclist was hit by an unidentified black vehicle. Officers shared a photograph of a small piece of metal recovered at the scene.
