Thanks to the fact that most of today’s smartphones are technically capable of making in-store mobile payments and more and more merchants are getting on board, mobile payment adoption is on the rise. According to eMarketer’s latest estimates, 55 million Americans aged 14 and over will make at least one in-store payment using their smartphone this year.

While the fact that mobile payment is increasingly popular is not a surprise, the current market leader certainly is. Despite tech giants Apple, Google and Samsung all offering their own payment services woven into their respective devices/operating systems, a non-tech company is the one bringing mobile payment to the masses: Starbucks. According to eMarketer, 23.4 million users will use the coffee chain’s mobile app to pay for their Frappuccino this year, edging out Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay in terms of reach.
